Being disabled myself, I found trying to apply for SSDI to be
incredibly difficult and without the funds to hire an attorney it was
just that more frustrating. By surfing the web I was able to find
some really good advice and information for free. I know that one of
the better sites for information was: http://www.thedisabilitydigest.com/cmd.php?af=562171
They have tons of FREE information, newsletter, and even conference
calls to ask questions. It took 18 months but I finally was able to
get my SSDI without using a lawyer.

Usually lawyers who help people get SSDI do not get paid until the person
receives their SSDI and then they only get a percentage of the backpay up to
a certain amount set by SS.

18 months is actually fairly normal in terms of wait time.

For questions on SSDI or SSI, people might want to check out the
alt.social-security-disability newsgroup.
