Older Burger King in Provo Utah: Problems
(too old to reply)

There is an inaccessible Burger King in Provo, Utah, with an arrogant
night manager who refuses to acknowledge there is a problem with his
store.

Location: 1160 North University Avenue (Across from Provo High)
Problem: Double doors, miscellaneous smaller issues, mainly with the
driveup for those who want to just pick it up outside and go while in
wheelchairs, the manager claimed there was a sensor issue (can be
fixed).
Claim for inaction: Night manager's wife is disabled and can get in,
manager does not realize that some people have larger wheelchairs,
etc., and can't get in via double doors that easy. There is a driveup
sensor issue that went unrecognized as well. Claims also that what
minor renovations are required would be 'too expensive'.

Other info about location: Store is rebuilt store that was discarded
by Carls Jr's parent in the late 90s when they expanded into Utah, was
built in the early 80s after Hardees purchased the site after Dee's
burgers went out of business. Building has had some remodeling since
1995, which requires that it be ADA compliant, it is to a good degree
but not fully.

Only thing known to be really needed so far is the issue with the
double doors and the driveup order station sensor issue mentioned
above althogh there could be others that have gone undiscovered.

Anyone have some valid email addresses for Burger King? All I can
find is the one in the WHOIS record plus the postmaster address
required by RFC 822 (see RFC-Ignorant.org for more information on the
reasons this is a requirement), and am reporting some agents at the
800 number for gift cards given on their website for hangup calls.
The site claims to not accept email inquiries either, although I did
email ***@whopper.com about this.

An update on the history of this building.

It is on the foundation pad of the old Dee's Burgers. When the Dees
family had a stinky divorce, part of the settlement was that one
spouse would keep the family restaurants (they still exist mainly in
Salt Lake County) and the other got the smaller burger places.

The spouse who got the burger places sold them to Hardees, Hardees
came in and took out some of the features of the old Dee's at this
location to more closely match the rest of the chain's stores. Again
this appears to have happened in the early 80s.

I'm planning to reach them at that number and the other number
tomorrow, but are there any email contacts to like their PR department
or regulatory affairs department (see bottom of 'contact us' page for
that PDF page)? They don't seem to want to talk to anyone besides
their own people.

As it is, this Burger King was still 'dead' on both Thursday and
Friday nights, despite its proximity to BYU. BYU is largely right
across the road from this to the east. A football game at Provo High
might have given them more traffic, as the arrogant manager involved
told me he had 'run out of buns' on Friday.

On another matter unrelated to the disability rights issue, the shake
machine was out of order at this same place for more than two weeks
recently, they actually had to cover up the shakes portion of the menu
board both inside and out as a result while they awaited the repairs
on that. The driveup was possibly the scene of a crime recently as
well, although it never got in the media. It is unknown if it was a
robber or even something like a medical incident in the drivethrough
that needed to be followed up on, but the indicators point to a crime.

I did get an email back from them today via the General Counsel's
office (great business letter attached as a PDF by the way, writing
those is a dying or lost art), and they referred me to the franchise
owner. The franchise owner contacted me within another half hour of
that, and hopefully this will be resolved soon. I'm hoping this will
be a win-win for all parties involved.

I'm happy to hear you followed up on this. It can only be a win-win
situation for all disabled people. The noise of a squeaky wheel travels far.
